WordPress vs Shopify vs a Custom Website: A Business Guide

The right website platform is the one your business can operate reliably after launch. Start with the work customers need to complete and the work your team needs to manage. A polished template does not tell you whether a platform will fit your catalogue, sales process or internal tools.

WordPress, Shopify and a custom build can each support useful business websites. The choice depends on requirements, ownership expectations and who will maintain the site.

When WordPress fits

WordPress is worth considering for a content-heavy company website, a publishing operation or a service business that needs staff to edit pages regularly. Its theme and plugin ecosystem can support many common requirements, but every extra extension introduces something to configure, update and evaluate.

Specify the editing experience your team needs. Ask the developer to demonstrate how you will update service pages, create articles and change navigation without breaking layouts. Establish responsibility for backups, security updates and extension compatibility.

WordPress can support commerce through extensions such as WooCommerce. Evaluate the complete operational setup rather than assume a content website and a store have the same maintenance requirements.

When Shopify fits

Shopify is designed around running an online store. It is worth evaluating when product management, checkout and order administration are central to the business. Check how your chosen payment providers, shipping services and inventory tools integrate with the platform.

Before committing, list requirements for variants, discount rules, product subscriptions, language support and third-party systems. Confirm current plan and application pricing directly with the vendors. A feature available through a paid application is an ongoing cost, not simply a development task.

Ask your team to test adding a product and handling a sample order. Administrative usability matters when the site becomes part of daily operations.

When a custom build fits

A custom website or application becomes a stronger option when a distinctive workflow, integration or interface cannot be handled comfortably by a standard platform. Examples include a customer portal with role-based access or a configuration tool tied to your internal systems.

A custom build also requires an explicit plan for deployment, editing, authentication, backups and future changes. Ask how another developer could maintain it if the original team becomes unavailable. Documentation and access ownership should be part of the handover.

Compare the full cost of operating the site

Separate the initial build from recurring hosting, subscriptions, extensions and support. Compare how much routine work requires developer involvement. Decide who owns the domain, content, designs and code, and understand any platform restrictions before signing.

No platform creates search rankings automatically. Discoverable pages, useful content, descriptive metadata, reliable internal links and a good experience still need to be implemented.

A practical decision process

  1. Write down the primary customer journey: enquiry, booking, purchase or account task.
  2. Identify who edits content and manages operations.
  3. List integrations and identify which are essential at launch.
  4. Test the customer and administrator workflows on a realistic prototype.
  5. Compare build cost, recurring cost and the maintenance plan.
